Being a woman in a male-dominated industry can be challenging.
Many will underestimate your knowledge and capabilities. Sometimes, barriers can be even more extreme, especially when it comes to accessing the loan capital your business needs to grow. This was just one of the challenges Amalia Martinez faced while operating her business, Elite Motors LLC, a women-owned used car dealership in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Amalia began her journey in the auto industry by working with other small car dealerships in the area. She quickly realized that she wanted to start her own dealership. Amalia opened her first lot in October 2023 with just three vehicles in a very small location. Within six months, she grew to more than 20 vehicles and needed a bigger space.
Growing a business, however, often requires additional investment. Amalia began exploring funding options but was turned away. Lenders doubted her capabilities or viewed her business as too risky.
Through a referral from a partner program at the University of Nevada Reno, Extension Program, Las Vegas, Amalia connected with Prestamos CDFI and leaned about the small business loan programs and technical assistance offered by this lender.

She began working with Prestamos CDFI, Business Development Officer Noe Gonzalez, who helped her secure a small business loan. This funding supported her company’s growth by enabling her to furnish a new office space, expand sales operations, and hire additional staff. Along with the small business loan, Amalia also received valuable technical assistance, including support in the areas of bookkeeping, financial strategy, and ongoing business advising.
Currently, Elite Motors maintains a rotating inventory of more than 45 vehicles with plans to continue expanding!
Amalia attributes much of her success to Prestamos CDFI and her commitment to building relationships with her customers. She strives to treat her clients with dignity and to make sure that they receive the best deal on their car. Her motto is “Llegas Caminando, Sales Manejando” or “Come in walking, leave driving”.
